The ATOM-GCA Study
Applanation Tonometry in Giant Cell Arteritis

Design and Objective
ATOM-GCA is a single-center study led by Dr Makhzoum in our specialized Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) clinic (HSCM). It evaluates the diagnostic performance of applanation tonometry in patients with suspected GCA. The main goal is to find out if this simple, accessible and non-invasive tool can facilitate early detection of active GCA.
What is applanation tonometry ?
This technique can be used to measure arterial stiffness by capturing pulse waveforms as they travel through the arterial system. By comparing differences in pulse wave velocity between patients with and without GCA, researchers hope to assess its diagnostic accuracy.

Who is eligible ?
Patients referred for suspected new-onset GCA to our specialized clinic and who are not currently using glucocorticoids or any immunosuppressive are considered for eligibility.
How can this study help patients ?
ATOM-GCA could help patients by providing a simple way to detect GCA through changes in arterial stiffness, allowing earlier treatment and reducing the risk of complications.
